How to book a confirmed lower berth for seniors. IRCTC explains

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has once again reiterated the rules for getting a lower berth for the elderly. Many users complain that they cannot get the lower bunk for the elderly people traveling with them.

Recently, a Twitter user tweeted: “I booked a ticket for my uncle last night (PNR 2448407929) in which I opted for a lower berth as first preference as he has amputated a leg and cannot travel by top or middle berth, but I always get a top berth.”

To this, the IRCTC from its official Twitter account issued a clarification in which it stated: “Sir, PNR No. 2448407929 is reserved under the general quota. In the general quota, you can give preference to the lower berths, but the allocation of berths is subject to After that, you must select the booking choice “Book only if the lower berth is allocated”.

In another tweet, he wrote: “Please note that the allocation of lower berths in the general quota is entirely subject to availability and there is no human intervention. You can also contact TTE on duty who is authorized to provide vacant lower berths to the needy.”

According to the rules, in all trains that have reserved sleeping places, a combined quota of six lower berths per car in Sleeper class and 3 lower berths per car each in AC 3-tier and AC-2-tier classes has been reserved for seniors.

Passengers aged 45 and over and pregnant women. In the case of Rajdhani, Duronto and fully air-conditioned/Express trains, the number of sleepers to be booked under this quota in 3AC is 4 lower sleepers per car compared to 3 lower sleepers per car in normal Courier/Express trains.

In addition, after the train has departed, if there are vacant lower berths available on the train and if an individual with a disability has booked on the authority of a disability concession or an elderly person or a pregnant woman, who was assigned an upper/middle berth, approached for the assignment of the vacant lower berths, the ticket control staff on board was authorized to assign them the vacant lower berth by making the necessary entries in the table.
